Al Mercante is a historic restaurant in Milan with over a century of heritage. It was founded in the early 1900s inside the Casa dei Panigarola, a fifteenth-century palazzo on Piazza dei Mercanti. 1976: a historic restaurant in Milan finds new life
In 1976, Corrado and Margherita Romanini took over the restaurant. As a result, it became a renowned dining destination. It was equally prized for business lunches and by lovers of authentic cooking. Above all, quality remained at the heart of every choice.
2010: Bottega Storica — a historic restaurant in Milan recognised by the City
In 2010, the City of Milan awarded Al Mercante the Bottega Storica title. This honour is reserved for venues that preserve the city’s cultural identity. Consequently, it cemented Al Mercante’s status as a true Milan landmark.
2018: a new chapter for this historic restaurant in Milan
On 9 June 2018, Simona and Claudio Romanini moved to Via Cesare Cantù 7, Piazza Pio XI, facing the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. However, the philosophy stayed the same: fresh ingredients selected daily and tradition-inspired dishes.
A unique setting: history meets contemporary design
The interiors bear the signature of Milanese designer Nicola Gallizia. He blended the restaurant’s century-old identity with modern elegance. Therefore, the space feels warm and inviting. It is ideal for a romantic dinner, a business lunch or a refined aperitivo.
