“The Fascination of Autographs” at the Ambrosiana and Pre-Theatre Dinner near La Scala
A pre-theatre dinner near La Scala paired with a cultural visit is the most refined way to experience Milan in spring 2026. Indeed, from 26 February to 5 May 2026, the Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana hosts “The charm of autographs“.Moreover, this captivating journey unfolds just steps from Teatro alla Scala and from Ristorante Al Mercante.
A rare encounter with history at the Ambrosiana
Inside the Pinacoteca halls in Piazza Pio XI, visitors come face to face with handwritten testimonies. Above all, the exhibition gathers documents by Galileo Galilei, Ludovico Ariosto, Napoleone Bonaparte and Giuseppe Verdi. This is far more than a display of manuscripts. Rather, it is an intimate encounter with the human side of history. Furthermore, a single pen stroke reveals the power of a thought fixed on paper.
Highlights include the letter Galileo sent to Federico Borromeo with a copy of Il Saggiatore. In addition, visitors can admire an autograph page of Orlando Furioso. Notably, a pardon decree signed by Napoleon and a recommendation note by Verdi complete the selection of rare pieces on display.
Turandot centenary: the ideal night for a pre-theatre dinner near La Scala
The timing is especially fortunate. From 1 to 29 April 2026, La Scala stages ten performances of Puccini’s Turandot. Consequently, the theatre celebrates the centenary of its 1926 world premiere. Nicola Luisotti conducts, while Davide Livermore directs. The cast features Anna Pirozzi and Roberto Alagna. Most curtains rise at 8:00 pm. However, a Sunday matinée is scheduled on 12 April.
After the show: fine dining in the historic centre
Finally, a short walk brings you to Ristorante Al Mercante in the heart of old Milan. There, you can enjoy an authentically Milanese evening of art, history and fine cuisine. Book your table to complete the experience.
